Book of a Thousand Days

I just finished reading a book in less than 1 day. Not a strange occurrence for me, I do it fairly often. But I L-O-V-E-D this book:Book of a Thousand Days by Shannon Hale. If you've read Princess Academy (Another fabulous book, by the way), then you recognize the author as a Newberry award winner. She does a magnificent job of creating fantasy worlds that are both mid-evil and steeped in mysterious, but beautiful folk lore.

I think what caught me first about the book was the tender heart of the main character, Bashti. She is a mucker who set out to the big city to look for work after her mother dies. She finds herself in the employ of a lady about to be imprisoned in a tower for 7 years for refusing to marry an evil Lord from another realm. Bashti is practically given the option to escape, but sees the desperation in her Lady's eyes, and chooses to stay so she can heal her Lady with her healing songs. If you've read my previous post, you will know that my heart has been cold and made of Reynold's wrap for a few days.(Okay, that's not my line, I got it from Dooce.com. It's a good one, huh?) It felt good to read about someone who innately wants to care for people. I used to be like that, before...

I intend to buy a copy of this book for my collection. Yes! It's that good! Read it already...

I have so got to start reading more. I've had a hard time concentrating lately. I started wondering if I was just losing my mind, you know, getting senile or something.

Finally, it occurred to me that I needed reading glasses. I've been avoiding reading because it is too hard to focus. You would think that I would have figured that out sooner.

I bought some glasses. Woo hoo!

Sigh. I'm getting old!

Happy New Year
