Should You Ask?

I've been thinking about this for awhile now. I am kind of weird about linking people to my blog. I have my family linked and a few really good friends. But should I link people if they are just a general acquaintance? Is there such thing as blog etiquette? I'm not sure exactly, but I have a few opinions on the matter.

This is my criteria for linking blogs:
  1. I comment on your blog, and you comment on my blog. This will earn you a spot on my blog roll.
  2. You are my family or super duper close friend. Hi Lisa, Emili, Meeka, and Emily H. This would be your category. I feel like I have some sort of "claim" on you.
  3. I want to link you, and I asked your permission.

I think it is kind of weird when people have like a hundred people on their blog list that aren't their family. I mean really, do you really KNOW all these people or are they more like acquaintances? And seriously, can you really keep up with that many blogs? Who has the time? It's kind of like on facebook, which I am new at. Some people I have noticed have several hundred friends. Do they really keep in contact with several hundred people, or is it a status thing to see how many "friends" you can accumulate? What is the point of that? At least on facebook, you are required to ask before you can be someones friend.

I guess my point is, should you ask the person before you link them to your blog? I think, yes. What do you think?

Well APPARENTLY I haven't earned my stripes here by commenting much on your blog. So sorry Leslie. I liked this post though--our new age of computers has made all kinds of new ettiquette situations that no one seems to know what to do. I will ALWAYS cling to capitlization and punctuation! I stand by them! I think the reason people link so many blogs is that they want comments. Blogs are all about getting comments. Just like Facebook is all about getting friends. Does it mean anything? Not really. Do I check my friends and comments constantly? You better believe it.

I've often wondered this myself. I don't know that many people I guess. Most of my friends live right by me and I see them everyday. I blog for the benefit of friends and family who aren't close but still want to know what's going on with my family. I didn't ask any of them if I coud add them. I guess I figured if they're checking me then I'm checking them.

I will say this...I tried facebook for like two days and hated it. Harrassing emails and people I don't even know wanting to be my friend just cuz we graduated from the same college. Ads cluttering up the whole page....GGRR!

My sis-in-law has gone private with her blog. What do you think about that? Then you really DO have to be invited to view the blog. I'm not sure where I stand on that one. I see both arguments.

I'm the same way. I don't add just anyone. I don't add people because everyone else ads them. I add them because I follow their blog and they follow mine. :)

My philosophy is when in doubt ask? :)
